Selective attention and asymmetry in the Müller-Lyer illusion.

چکیده
Two experiments reexamined the effect of selective spatial attention on the magnitudes of the wings- in and wings-out forms of the Müller-Lyer (M-L) illusion and a version of the illusion in which the two forms are superimposed to produce a figure (XX) flanked at both ends by an X. For the XX figure, ignoring the outer wings produced significant underestimation of shaft length, whereas ignoring the inner wings had no significant effect. For the M-L figures, ignoring the wings was more effective in attenuating the magnitude of the wings-out than of the wings-in illusion. The results are discussed with reference to space-based approaches to visual attention and to claims that attentional modulation of illusion magnitudes implicates high-level or cognitive factors in the formation of the M-L illusion.

Testing day: The effects of processing bias induced by Navon stimuli on the strength of the Müller-Lyer illusion
Explanations for the cognitive basis of the Müller-Lyer illusion are still frustratingly mixed. To date, Day's (1989) theory of perceptual compromise has received little empirical attention. In this study, we examine the merit of Day's hypothesis for the Müller-Lyer illusion by biasing participants toward global or local visual processing through exposure to Navon (1977) stimuli, which are know...
متن کاملA (partial) explanation for the Müller-Lyer illusion
The Müller-Lyer illusion is one of the best-known and most frequently examined optical illusions. After pointing out that it is unlikely that any one account would give a full explanation for all the features of this illusion, I argue for two claims. First, I aim to point out that an essential component of the Müller-Lyer illusion has something to do with picture perception (just as Gregory ini...

متن کاملThe neural mechanisms underlying the Müller-Lyer illusion and its interaction with visuospatial judgments.
Arrows terminating a line can distort the perceived line length. This so-called Müller-Lyer illusion can be used in healthy human subjects to mimic the performance of neglect patients in visuospatial judgments (e.g., in the landmark task). In this study, we investigated the neural mechanisms underlying the Müller-Lyer illusion, the landmark task, and their interaction. This was achieved by para...
متن کاملThe Müller-Lyer illusion seen by the brain: an event-related brain potentials study.
In two experiments, event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were used to examine the neural correlates of a visual illusion effect in Müller-Lyer illusion tasks (illusion stimuli) and baseline tasks (no-illusion stimuli). The behavioral data showed that the illusion stimuli indeed yielded an illusion effect. Scalp ERP analysis revealed its neurophysiological substrate: the Müller-Lyer illusion ta...
